The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 4.......... The EVO IV was the 4th version of Mitsubishis road going competition car. Unlike the EVO2 and 3 this was in fact a totally new car and NOT an EVOLUTION of the previous model! The engine and transaxle was rotated 180 to better balance the weight and eliminate torque steer. The body was a totally different shape with a much more modern look and the engine was upgraded again to produce substantially more power. The EVO four was introduced in August 1996 and most models were registered late this year and throughout 1997.Mitsubishi produced two versions of the IV, a competition version, the RS and the more user friendly GSR. The RS version was produced a limited-slip front differential and a friction type LSD at the rear. It also came with GLX seats and 16" steel wheels as these were items that would be replaced by anyone entering the car into competition events. The RS also had wind up windows, no air conditioning-just heater, and a few extra brace bars to strengthen the chassis, one behind the front grill and the other across the boot floor. The RS also had a factory option of thinner body panels and thinner glass. The GSR and the RS shared a new twin scroll turbocharger which helped to increase power to 280 PS (276 hp/206 kW) at 6500 rpm and 260 ftlbf (352 Nm) of torque at 3000 rpm. Mitsubishi's new Active yaw control appeared as a factory option on the GSR model, which used steering, throttle input sensors and G sensors to computer-hydraulically controlled torque split individually to the rear wheels, the aim of which was to increase speed that the car could be cornered. The production run for the EVO IV was 10,000. The Evolution IV can be distinguished by its two large fog lights on the front bumper, and the newly designed tail lights on the rear, which became a standard design to Evolution VI, which would become yet another trademark of the Evolution series. This new generation was slightly heavier than previous Evos - the GSR in particular due to the added technology systems- but to counter this the car produced even more power - the Weight of the RS being 1260 kg and the GSR being 1345 kg. As well as the active yaw control the GSR IV has masses of hi-technology system to make it one of the quickest saloons on the road. Obviously it has a complex 4 wheel drive system, a 280 BHP turbocharged, intercooled 2ltr engine with twin jet intercooler water spray, 4 wheel anti-lock brakes, quick power assisted steering, vented disc both at the front and the rear, lightweight OZ alloy wheels, and powerful front fog lights. Inside the car has Momo sports steering wheel with drivers air bag (passenger was an option), digital climate control and air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, remote controlled retractable door mirrors, and superb Recaro sports seats to keep you comfortable and in control when on the edge. The performance of the EVO IV is phenomenal with 0-60 time of around 5 seconds and a top speed of 149MPH. Service costs are reasonable and the car is reliable when used with some respect. It is very easy and light to drive and can makes a great everyday car with the 4 doors and huge boot making the car totally practical. The downside are fairly heavy fuel consumption and relatively high insurance cost.
