This car in detail ...

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5.......... The Evo V, which was released in January 1998 and stayed on sale for around a year, was an exercise in taking the already superb EVO IV and tweaking it rather than radically changing the car. Visually the V looks a bigger car than the IV despite sharing the same body shell. This is due to the track of the car being widened by 10mm which required the use of a flared wheel arch kit on the rear and wider (now aluminum) front wings (fenders) giving the car a meaner, more aggressive look. To compliment this, the front nosecone was re-designed to improve both the visual aspects of the car and cooling, and the rear wing was changed for an adjustable down force aluminum item. Wheel size was upped to 17, the manufacturer still being OZ and this allowed the use of Brembo 17 discs with 4 pot Brembo calipers front while 16 discs and 2 pot Brembos were used on the rear in place of the Mitsubishi brakes of the IV. Other changes included slight revisions to the suspension. Lighter pistons, a steel head gasket and an improved turbo were also fitted. Power officially remained the same at 276 BHP (because of an agreement that the Japanese manufacturers have with the Japanese government) but was actually closer to 300BHP and torque was increased slightly. The interior was similar although the Recaro seats were of a better standard and the material used on the V Recaros wears far better than that used on the IV. As with the IV Mitsubishi produced two versions of the IV, a competition version, the RS and the more user friendly GSR. The RS version was produced a limited-slip front differential and a friction type LSD at the rear. The RS now came with Recaro seats and alloy wheels though still had had wind up windows, no air conditioning-just heater, and a few extra brace bars to strengthen the chassis, one behind the front grill and the other across the boot floor. The RS also had a factory option of thinner body panels and thinner glass. All GSR Vs came with the active yaw control, a computer controlled system that improved cornering performance. As well as the active yaw control the GSR V has masses of hi-technology system to make it one of the quickest saloons on the road. Obviously it has a complex 4 wheel drive system, a 280 BHP turbocharged, intercooled 2ltr engine with twin jet intercooler water spray, 4 wheel anti-lock brakes, quick power assisted steering, vented disc both at the front and the rear, lightweight OZ alloy wheels, and powerful front fog lights. Inside the car has Momo sports steering wheel with drivers air bag (passenger was an option), digital climate control and air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, remote controlled retractable door mirrors, and superb Recaro sports seats to keep you comfortable and in control when on the edge. The performance of the EVO V is phenomenal with 0-60 time of around 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 150 MPH. Service costs are reasonable and the car is reliable when used with some respect. It is very easy and light to drive and can makes a great everyday car with the 4 doors and huge boot making the car totally practical. The downside are fairly heavy fuel consumption and relatively high insurance cost.
