The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6...........
Again Mitsubishi refined the 5 and made small but worthwhile improvements to produce the EVO 6. Built between February1999 and March 2001 the EVO 6 and its special editions were the ultimate CN9A/CP9A Lancer, before the body was changed completely to take advantage of new World Rally Championship rules.
The main advance over the EVO 5 centered on cooling, where big improvements were made. The car was fitted with a larger intercooler to lower the intake air temperature, a larger oil cooler, and different pistons. The air flow around the radiator and intercooler was increased by moving the license plate to the side and reducing the size of the spotlights and the bumper openings at the front of the car were enlarged.
Detail improvements to the handling were made by using aluminum lower control arms to reduce the unsprung weight and the body shell was stiffened with 130 extra spot welds and the use of thicker metal in some sections. Due to changes in the World Rally Championship rules governing the size of aerodynamic attachments the rear spoiler was reduced in size but given a twin-wing design that more than made up for the reduction in downforce. A different style of alloy wheels, though still supplied by OZ were fitted.
To commemorate rally driver Tommi Makinens feat of winning his fourth consecutive World Rally Drivers Championship, Mitsubishi produced the Ltd Edition EVO VI Tommi Mackinen. This car was produced with optimum tarmac performance in mind. The car received substantial improvements and is generally know as the EVO 6.5. The front bumper was again changed to lower intake temperature further and improve the cars already stunning looks. A titanium turbocharger was used which gave quicker response and better low to mid range torque, and a different exhaust, unique to the Mackinen was fitted. The car was lowered by 10mm and the suspension tuned to give quicker response on tarmac. The steering rack from the RS (a competition based model) was utilized and a different strut brace fitted on the front. As well as the front spoiler the Tommi got a set of 17 Enkei white alloy wheels similar to those used on the rally car and a set of Recoro seats embossed with T Makinen Edition Logo. As an option Mitsubishi offered a WRC decal kit on red vehicles that made the car a replica of Tommi Mackinens rally car.
As with the EVO V, the brakes were Brembo 17 discs with 4 pot Brembo callipers front while 16 discs and 2 pot Brembos were used on the rear. Despite the changes to the engine torque and BHP were officially the same as the 5, though acceleration was up with the 0-6- time now around 4.3 seconds and bear in mind, a Ferrari 360 Modena takes around 4.5! Service costs are reasonable and the car is reliable when used with some respect. It is very easy and light to drive and can makes a great everyday car with the 4 doors and huge boot making the car totally practical. The downside, as with the EVO 4 and 5 are fairly heavy fuel consumption and relatively high insurance cost for young or convicted drivers
By 1999 Mitsubishis UK importer, the Colt Car Company had begun to take notice of the level of interest in the model line and brought a small number of EVO 6s and 6.5s into the UK. These are essentially the same specification wise as the grey imports on the market. While some UK official UK cars have the advantage of a (understandable) service history, winters driven on salty roads in the UK tend to mean they are much less fresh than a car just imported from Japan.
