The Honda Integra Type R DC5....... Type R models are special performance editions of their respective model families. The design of Type R ("R" for "Racing")models was originally focused on race conditions, with an emphasis on minimizing weight, and maximizing performance potential (e.g. engine tuning, suspension set-up). Thus, Type R models were first conceived for racetracks. However, due to Honda's increased focus on their highly regarded VTEC engines, the Type R was eventually designed for a much wider market. Unlike its predecessor the Integra Type R DC2, the DC5 Honda Integra Type R never made it to the UK officially. Launched shortly after the EP3 Civic Type R, Honda felt there wasn't room for both and decided on the much milder Civic rather than the sharp, edgy Integra. The DC5 Integra grew in size and engine capacity over the much loved DC2. The chassis was made much stiffer and the steering more positive while the car had better brakes (designed in collaboration with Brembo) and better grip. The engine is a larger, though lighter, and more refined 1990 cc unit, with flatter torque curve which gives 220BHP and revs hard all the way up to its 8400 RPM rev limiter. Torque is 152 lb/ft. The power is fed through a super light ally flywheel, which gives instant throttle response to a Limited Slip Differential via a close ration 6 speed gearbox. Huge improvements have been made in the structural rigidity coupled with stiffer suspension improving both road and track performance. The roof line is now 60mm taller to accommodate the use of a helmet when used on the track. Unlike its K20A cousin, the Civic Type R, the Integra is equipped with traditional mechanical power steering increasing feel throughout the 2.6 turns lock to lock. The wheels are now 17 inch items to help clear the front 300mm vented discs clamped by Brembo four-pot callipers. Each brake assembly saves 2.3kg but overall the DC5 Integra Type R gained 72kg due to the larger engine and increased crash structures. Equipment levels are good with anti lock brakes, air conditioning, climate control, electric windows, central locking, tinted glass, remote control retractable door mirrors Recaro seats (red in some cars), Momo air bag steering wheel. The car has a clutch start system that requires the clutch to be fully pressed to the floor before it can be started. A Spec C version has rear privacy glass, rear wash wipe and on later cars push button start. In all the DC5 Integra is more comfortable and refined than the DC2 for use every day, with reasonable rear seats and decent fuel consumption, yet a seriously quick fast road track car without any modifications. Its rare enough to be a talking point, and as with its older sibling, holds its value well and rarely breaks.
